On October 19, 2024, a research team from the Department of Languages, Arts, and Cultural Management (DBSMB) at the Vocational College of Universitas Gadjah Mada presented their findings on the study titled “Exploring Language Visibility in Public Announcements in Yogyakarta” at the National Seminar on Applied Technology (SNTT) held at TILC SV UGM. This seminar provided a platform for researchers to share insights and foster innovation in various fields, including cultural studies.
The research, conducted from May to October 2024, focused on the use of Javanese, Indonesian, and English in public announcements at key transportation hubs in Yogyakarta, specifically Tugu Yogyakarta Railway Station and Yogyakarta International Airport. This study aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting cultural diversity and fostering innovation in communication practices.
Utilizing secondary data sources such as news articles, videos and official documents, the research team gathered insights into the language practices prevalent in these public spaces. Although direct interviews with stakeholders and community members were not feasible, the analysis of existing literature provided a comprehensive understanding of how language is utilized in public announcements.
Initial observations indicated that Javanese is likely to dominate spoken announcements in informal contexts, reflecting the local culture and community identity. In contrast, Indonesian is expected to be the primary language used in both written and spoken forms, catering to a broader audience, including domestic travelers. English, while essential for international tourists, appears to be limited to specific contexts, such as travel-related signage and announcements.
The findings from this research are anticipated to offer a detailed overview of Yogyakarta’s linguistic landscape, illustrating the role of language as a vital tool for information dissemination. By understanding the dynamics of language use in public announcements, the research aims to contribute to the broader discourse on multilingualism and cultural representation in Indonesia.
This exploration not only underscores the significance of language in public communication but also highlights the importance of creativity and innovation in adapting to the diverse needs of the population. The research findings are expected to provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and cultural organizations in Yogyakarta.
By recognizing the importance of multilingualism in public announcements, stakeholders can better address the communication needs of both residents and visitors, fostering a more inclusive environment. The research team hopes that their findings will encourage further studies and discussions on the role of language in cultural expression and public communication.
In conclusion, the presentation at SNTT 2024 marks a significant step in understanding the linguistic dynamics of Yogyakarta. The research not only contributes to academic discourse but also serves as a practical guide for enhancing public communication strategies in a multicultural society.
